Diversity Spotlight Thursday – #10

DST

I’m sooo happy to be back with another DST! I haven’t had much time to write and schedule posts, but I’m so glad I managed to find a few hours to dedicate to the blog. It’s been a few weeks since I last shared the diverse reads that are on my to-be-read and read piles. So, let me know below if you’ve read these books!

A Book I Have Read

23654535THE WRATH AND THE DAWN BY RENÉE AHDIEH | Arabic Culture

A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

I must admit that I picked this book up because of a read-a-thon I participated in a couple of months ago, and I couldn’t have been more grateful, because this book was amazing. At first the premise sounded interesting but the hype scared me away, then I figured I needed to see what this book was all about. I can’t recommend it enough, it has beautiful writing, incredible characters, intriguing subtle fantasy elements and I particularly loved getting to know a bit of the Arabic Culture.

A Book on My TBR

BAD BOY BY ELLIOT WAKE | Transgender MC

Vlog star Renard Grant has nothing to prove: he’s got a pretty face, chiseled body, and two million adoring video subscribers. Plus the scars on his chest and a prescription for testosterone. Because Ren is transgender: assigned female at birth, living now as male. He films his transition and shares it bravely with the world; his fans love his honesty and positivity.

But Ren has been living a double life.

Off-camera, he’s Cane, the muscle-bound enforcer for social justice vigilante group Black Iris. As Cane, he lets his dark side loose. Hurts those who prey on the disempowered. Indulges in the ugly side of masculinity. And his new partner, Tamsin Baylor, is a girl as rough and relentless as him. Together, they terrorize the trolls into silence.

But when a routine Black Iris job goes south, Ren is put in the crosshairs. Someone is out to ruin his life. He’s a bad boy, they say, guilty of what he punishes others for.

Just like every other guy: at heart, he’s a monster, too.

Now Ren’s got everything to prove. He has to clear his name, and show the world he’s a good man. But that requires facing demons he’s locked away for years. And it might mean discovering he’s not such a good guy after all.

Bad Boy is also a book that will be out soon but it has been on my TBR for a long time. I really, really feel the need to read Elliot Wake’s books, I only need to pick.them.up.

THERE WILL BE OTHER SUMMERS BY BENJAMIN ALIRE SÁENZ | Latinx, LGBT

This one doesn’t even have a blurb and much less a cover, and I can only guess when it will release, sometime late next year? Early 2018? But I’m suuuper excited to continue reading about Ari and Dante, these two are the cutest and I actually miss them.

For who don’t know what I’m talking about, this will be the sequel to Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets of The Universe. A wonderful book about to two Mexican boys in El Paso, Texas. Here you’ll find friendship, family, sexuality and what it means to discover all the secrets of the universe. And the good thing is that this is actually a sequel and not the same book told from Dante’s POV — the first one was from Ari’s.
