I don’t always believe in character development. Not every character needs to go on a self-discovery journey, not every character needs to be likable in order to be a great character. That’s why I always lean towards the unsympathetic and hard-to-love ones, I think there’s real challenge in writing characters without the best of morals. I’ve been slowly realizing that my favorite characters ever are like this, the unlikable ones, and here a few of them!

ALASKA YOUNG FROM LOOKING FOR ALASKA. I think Alaska wins the title for most unlikable character amongst YA readers. She’s the epitome of unlikable and I kind of adore her.
CERSEI LANNISTER FROM A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. Long may she reign? Uhm not so fast. I really doubt we’ll find redeeming qualities in her, but hey, she’s so fucking amazing at being the worst character out there, and she’s so layered that it’s kind of hard to get to know her on a deeper level.
LISBETH SALANDER FROM THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. She does what it’s right, and takes matters into her own hands when it comes to justice, she’s one of the most incredible characters there is.
NICOLETTE HOLLAND FROM HOW TO DISAPPEAR. She’s the classic girl that does what needs to be done and she’s unapologetic about it, and to have that kind of conviction is admirable.
RHYSAND FROM A COURT OF MIST AND FURY. I’m pretty sure a lot of people didn’t like Rhys in A Court of Thorns and Roses, and yes, with reasons, but I felt like there was something more to him than meets the eye. His dedication and sacrifice for his people says so much about him.
Is there an unlikable character you cannot help but love? One you love to hate?
